Życie jest jak tramwaj kiedyś trzeba wysiąść, Bywa różnie – kwadratowo i podłużnie, Pieniądze szczęścia nie dają, Nudy na pudy, Ni przypiął, ni wypiął, Żyją na kartę rowerową, Wyjdę z siebie i stanę obok – these and other similar phrases (humorous, anonymous, fixed in language, characteristic of face-to-face contacts) do not have one name. • Iwona KOSEK, Katarzyna ZAWILSKA: Lexical idiosyncrasies in phraseological units (on chosen examples)
From the point of view of the history of Polish language lexical units form interesting scientific material due to the phenomenon of motivation and its different levels. The subject of the description is a subgroup of units with lexical motivation which is at present unclear. The scientific material comprises the units with isolated components which cannot be identified with any lexem used in contemporary Polish. Some of such units are: przepaść z kretesem, mieć kuku na muniu, leżeć odłogiem, złapać wilka. The aim of the paper is to explain the motivation of these units using historical dictionaries of Polish language and first of all to show the doubts and problems faced by scientist while interpreting dictionary data.
  • Maria WĘGIEL: What is the link between Nike and a proverb. Proverbs in the contemporary literary text
The article is about the attempt to find the answer to the question in what range and in which shape the proverbs are present in contemporary literature. We extended the analysis over 13 published books which were awarded the Nike prize over the years 1997–2009. The proverbs occurred only in 6 prose books with 19 units either woven into the matter of the text or quoted as a citation. Half of them occurred in a basic canonical form whilst the rest came in abbreviations or a modified form. It was also noted that the proverbs occur in the speech of characters representing the older generation.
  • Dorota SUCHACKA: 'Hello, niemowlę' – on the language of emigrants in the works of Michał Choromański
The paper is on presenting the most interesting language phenomena, occurring in the spoken language of Polish emigrants the heroes of Michał Choromański’s. As the research material we chose several after-war novels of the author, describing the fate of Polish emigrants abroad, among others in South America. Mainly the dialogues were subjected to analysis. The dialogues directly present the manner of speaking of emigrants, full of English, French and Spanish influences. Due to the fact that the description concerns a piece of literature the paper mentions the issues of lingual stylization.
  • Iwona WOWRO: U Lema gra Gala i Ala, Gargamelu proper names in palindromes
The aim of the article is to describe those proper names which are most frequently used in palindromes and to present the variety of palindrome structures. • Renata DŹWIGOŁ: : The picture of a table in Polish language
The present article attempts to reconstruct, in terms of language, the picture of a table on the basis of Polish proverbs, idiomatic phrases, etymology and lexical-graphical definitions of the word table. Word formation sets with the lexeme table were analysed, most of which were terminology expressions, as well as collocations listed in dictionaries. The basic aspects in the linguistic picture of the artifact are: the use and appearance of a table clearly interrelated. The majority of the gathered lexicographical material comes from the resources of Old Polish language which is why in the linguistic picture of a table there are two clearly visible points of view: one of a nobleman and another of a peasant. From the perspective of a nobleman, a table appears both as a place which designates or, rather, asserts high social status and as a place where the code of savoir-vivre must be obeyed. Full table as a reward for work is a picture built from the perspective of a peasant.
