  • E. RUDNICKA: About the historical context and reception in Polish metalexicography of the prewar dictionary of Polish edited by Tadeusz Lehr-Spławiński
    The article concerns the historical context of preparing and publishing the prewar Polish dictionary developed under Tadeusz Lehr-Spławiński’s management and edited by the well-known and reputed Warsaw company Publishing Bookshop Trzaska, Evert & Michalski. The state of art concerning the dictionary was analyzed and commented on. The common belief about the outbreak of war as the reason of breaking up and squandering the lexicographical work was reflected upon. Furthermore, the divergence regarding the title and the scope of the lexicographical material was thoroughly discussed and explained using information regarding the situational context of preparing and publishing the dictionary.
  • A. PRZEPIÓRKOWSKI, A. PATEJUK: Lexico-semantic coordination in the system of contemporary Polish (on the basis of the National Corpus of Polish)
    The aim of this paper is to refute the thesis by Zygmunt Saloni that structures such as „Kto, co i komu dał?” („Who gave what to whom?”, literally: „Who, what and whom gave?”) do not belong to the system of contemporary Polish and that their conjunctionless counterparts (here: „Kto co komu dał?”, literally: „Who what whom gave?”) should be used instead. We show that the discussed phenomenon, called lexico-semantic coordination, is frequent in the National Corpus of Polish and that it occurs in a variety of genres and with a variety of pronouns – not just wh-words, but also n-words, various kinds of indefinites, pronouns expressing universal quantification, etc. Moreover, relevant examples may be found in a number of linguistic works, where they are cited as grammatical, without any comment on their possible unacceptability. All this leads to the conclusion that lexico-semantic coordination belongs both to the norm and to the system of contemporary Polish.
  • M. CZEREPOWICKA: SEJF – The Electronic Dictionary of Polish Multi-Word Units
    The aim of the article is to present the Electronic Dictionary of Polish Multi-Word Units (SEJF). A multi- -word unit is defined as an expression which meets one of the criteria: the meanings of the words do not add up or at least one of the components appears in a specific distribution. Therefore, in the dictionary there are expressions such as a devil’s advocate, rara avis as well as bit by bit, blindfold, fiksum dyrdum. Later the author discusses particular stages of the grammatical description of the units and the connection between the SEJF and the National Corpus of Polish. There is also a discussion on some lexicographical and grammatical problems connected with the description of Polish multi-word units.
  • M. KLAPPER: Vocabulary of the Polish Task Force in Afghanistan as the youngest layer of Polish soldier slang
    The article presents the youngest layer of Polish soldier slang invented and used by members of the Polish Task Force in Afghanistan. About 120 slang words and phrases were found on the blog and in the book written by Marcin Ogdowski. These include names of people, places, weapons, vehicles, food, activities and procedures, behavioral and mental states. The author tries to track their origin and find the exact meaning.
  • A. CZYŻYK-CYZIO: Mechanisms of self-promotion in electoral propaganda of PO and PiS (a case study of the 2007 parliamentary election campaign)
    Self-promotion, which allows political parties to present themselves as a group of people who are reliable, experienced and ambitious, plays a key role in pre-election propaganda. In the parliamentary election campaign in 2007, politicians of the two leading rival parties – PO and PiS – used both explicit and implicit ways of self-presentation with the aim of winning the sympathy of voters. The explicit means included the first person plural verb forms; the implicit means- a much larger group- encompassed various ingratiation techniques and linguistic means such as metaphors or presuppositions. The main goal of the following article is to demonstrate that the pre-election self-presentation of PO and PiS uses the same (mostly manipulative) mechanisms of verbal influence on voters, although the rhetoric, views, or agendas of both parties vary considerably.
  • B. DUNAJ: What syntax should be taught at school?
    The aim of the article is to discuss changes which should be introduced in teaching syntax at school. The author claims that a new description of syntax should be based both on the form and on the function of syntactic units. It is necessary to introduce a unit which is higher than the word and lower than the clause, i.e. the phrase. The following syntactic phenomena should be taught at school (apart from coordination and subordination): valency and syntactic accommodation. In the author’s opinion the distinction of parts of the clause should be analysed but their definitions should predominantly be based on formal criteria.
